Webcomic Woes #24 - Okay, first of all, I can’t believe everyone isn’t already referring to the Tumblr purge as Flagnarok.
More seriously: Anyone who wants advice about setting up an independently-hosted comic using Wordpress, hit me up. (First tip: use Webcomic 5.) I’ve been doing this for years, I’ve got answers – and if not, I’ll know where to find someone who does.
From the left-hand menu of your WordPress Dashboard, select Tools and Import.
From the Import screen, select Tumblr and Install Now.
Run the Importer.
The Import Tumblr screen comes up. Don’t worry about the technical stuff. All you’re doing here is making it so that WordPress can talk to directly Tumblr and vice versa. Instead of you having to pack all of your posts into a suitcase so you can leave the Tumblr hotel and go across town and check into the WordPress hotel and unpack your posts there, you’re just going to put your posts into a pneumatic tube that’s going to shoot directly into your new room, easy peasy lemon squeezy.
There’s a joke in there about the Internet being a series of tubes, but that would tell you how old I am.
Click on the link to the Tumblr page where you’ll create the app.
Click on the big green Register application button.
The next page is called Register your application and it’s where you’ll use the information that the WordPress Import Tumblr page gave you. Everything other than the following things can remain blank.
Select anything you want for your Application Name.
The Application Website and the Default callback URL will have been provided by WordPress.
Put whatever you like for the Application Description.
Select the I’m not a robot button and click Register.
Now you’ve got the information you need to connect your WordPress and Tumblr accounts.
Back on the WordPress side of things you can enter your OAuth Consumer Key and Secret Key to connect your WordPress and Tumblr accounts. Click Connect to Tumblr.
Select Authorize the Application.
Grant the Tumblr application that you’ve created access to your WordPress.
Select the blog you want to import. (All of your sideblogs will show as well. As you can see, I have far too many. I refuse to apologize for my ways.)
And you’re off. I have a gigabit ethernet connection and seem to average maybe 415 posts an hour, give or take.
